Traditional and Classical Music of the Eastern Mediterranean Countries

Mawwal perform songs and instrumental music from the multicultural world of the Ottoman Empire. As well as traditional Arabic songs and Greek songs of the Ottoman period, the group perform instrumental dances of the region. Mawwal also specialise in the repertory of classical instrumental compositions from the Arab countries and Turkey, where the prominence of Jewish, Greek and Armenian composers reflects the cultural diversity of the Ottoman period. Each piece is presented on instruments appropriate to the traditions of the region, collected by members of the group on their travels in Syria, Egypt, Turkey, Greece and Israel.
